THE USED BAND
The Used is an American rock band from Orem, Utah, that formed in 2001. The group consists of lead vocalist and keyboardist Bert McCracken, guitarist Quinn Allman, bassist Jeph Howard, and drummer Dan Whitesides who replaced founding member Branden Steineckert in 2006.
The group signed to Reprise Records and rose to fame in June 2002 after releasing their self-titled debut album. They followed up with their second album, In Love and Death, in September 2004 and their third album, Lies for the Liars, in May 2007. Shallow Believer, an EP that featured most of the band's B-sides, was released in February 2008. They spent 2008 working on their fourth studio album, Artwork, which was released in August 2009.[1] A fifth album, titled Vulnerable, was released in March 2012 through the independent label Hopeless Records. In summer 2013 they released another EP titled The Ocean of the Sky. Their sixth album, Imaginary Enemy, released in April 2014.
THE USED ALBUMS
2002
The Used is the self-titled debut album by American alternative rock band The Used. It was released on June 25, 2002 and has since been certified gold in the US.
The Used was mastered using HDCD technology. Although it is unmarked, playing the album in a CD player able to decode HDCD will give superior sound quality.
2003
Maybe Memories is a compilation album by American rock band The Used. It was released on July 15, 2003 and has since been certified platinum.[2] The album consists of live songs from their self-titled album, demos from Demos from the Basement, and previously unreleased material.
2004
In Love and Death is the second studio album by American alternative rock band The Used. It was released on September 28, 2004 and has since been certified gold in America.[11] It is their most well received and successful album to date. This was the first album for which Alex Pardee did the artwork, and he has done all artwork for The Used since, excluding, ironically, 2009's Artwork. The title and music reference a number of tragic events that surrounded vocalist Bert McCracken during the album's production, notably the death of his pregnant girlfriend.
"In Love and Death" is the final studio album to feature drummer Branden Steineckert.
In Love and Death was mastered using HDCD technology. Although it is unmarked, playing the album in a CD player able to decode HDCD will give superior sound quality.
2007
Along with the Vancouver concert from the 2005 Taste of Chaos tour, the DVD updates the band's history since 2003's Maybe Memories with footage about 2004's In Love and Death, the world tour, and the making of the new album Lies for the Liars as well as music videos. In addition, the band invited fans to submit questions and then videotaped those selected. It also gave a preview of "Pretty Handsome Awkward", the first music to be heard off of Lies for the Liars, and the recording of "My Pesticide" and "Tunnel"
2007
Lies for the Liars is the third studio album by American alternative rock band The Used. It was released on May 22, 2007.
While only eleven tracks are featured on the standard copy of Lies for the Liars, bonus tracks were released on certain versions. In total, the band recorded 19 songs, from about 40 that were written in preparation for the album. Those songs not featured on a version of the album were released as bonus tracks, on CD singles, and the Shallow Believer EP. This is the first album without Branden Steineckert as the drummer. He was kicked out of the band in August 2006. Dean Butterworth of Good Charlotte recorded the drums for the album. Dan Whitesides toured with the band and was later announced as the official new drummer.
2009
Artwork is the fourth studio album by American alternative rock band The Used, released through Reprise in the United States and the UK on August 31, 2009.
The Used began writing for Artwork in early 2008, and originally hoped to enter the studio shortly after Kevin Lyman's 2008 "Get a Life Tour" with Weezer front-man Rivers Cuomo as producer of the album.[14] The Used expressed their interest in the raw sound found on Weezer's 1996 album Pinkerton, and hoped to create a similar sound by working with Cuomo. The band ended up working with producer Matt Squire (Panic! at the Disco, Boys Like Girls, The Receiving End of Sirens) and did not enter the studio until the end of 2008.
The Used experienced several changes upon making Artwork. The band changed management within their label Reprise Records. This was the first album with new drummer Dan Whitesides; also the first studio album that was not produced by Goldfinger's frontman John Feldmann. Feldmann had been working with The Used since lead singer Bert McCracken threw a demo on stage during a Goldfinger concert in 2001. Commenting on the band's state prior to these changes, guitarist Quinn Allman felt that, "we were kept in a space with our resources that was creating an essence for our band that wasn't who we truly were." These changes allowed The Used to take their music in a new direction with Artwork.
2012
Vulnerable is the fifth studio album by American alternative rock band The Used. It was released on March 26, 2012, under their own label Anger Music Group through, Hopeless Records. The album was produced by John Feldmann, who also produced the band's first three studio albums.
Lead singer Bert McCracken stated about the album by saying: "This record’s really about becoming more than just who you are, and allowing yourself that vulnerability to be a more powerful person. It’s a lot more positive than a lot of records we’ve written in the past. I think everyone could use some positivity nowadays."
McCracken also said about the music: "There’s a lot of hip-hop influence, beats and drum and bass kind of stuff, but it’s also still a The Used record, by all means. Just like any other Used record, it’s a horse of many colors: There are a lot of soft and heavy sounds, there are a lot of brutal, sharp, bright sounds, and the tempos are anywhere from ultra-slow to super fast and heavy. There are a lot of different conceptual feelings on the record.
2014
Imaginary Enemy is the sixth studio album by The Used. It was released on April 1, 2014, under their own record label GAS Union through Hopeless Records. The album was produced by John Feldmann, who also produced the band's first three and fifth studio albums. It is the first album released on, and the second label the band created and own, GAS Union. The album charted at #14 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Independent albums chart.
In an interview with Jeph, he stated that they recorded the album "backwards" by having the vocals recorded first and then having the music written to the vocals. It is the first time they have recorded like this and did so because they were unhappy with the sound of the songs when recording the music so they scrapped the dozen songs they had written and tried something new.
